India's sugar production witnessed an 11% year-on-year decline, totaling 74.05 lakh tonnes during the October 1-December 15 period of the ongoing marketing year. The decrease is attributed to reduced output in Maharashtra and Karnataka, as reported by the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA). In the current 2023-24 marketing year, sugar factories in Maharashtra and Karnataka commenced operations 10-15 days later compared to the previous year. The total production until December 15 stood at 74.05 lakh tonnes, down from 82.95 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year. Uttar Pradesh experienced an increase in sugar production to 22.11 lakh tonnes, while Maharashtra and Karnataka witnessed declines to 24.45 lakh tonnes and 16.95 lakh tonnes, respectively. ISMA projected the total sugar production for the 2023-24 marketing year at 325 lakh tonnes, with no diversion for ethanol. The government, aiming to stabilize prices and enhance domestic supply, prohibited sugar exports for the current marketing year. Additionally, the food ministry recently authorized the diversion of 17 lakh tonnes of sugar for ethanol production, utilizing sugarcane juice, sugar syrup, and B-heavy molasses.
